The Leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF) and UPFA MP for Colombo District Wimal Weerawansa has been released on bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court. He was ordered released on a cash bail of Rs 50,000 and two personal bails of Rs 500,000 each by Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne. He was also ordered to hand over his passport to the court as he has been barred from leaving the country. The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court had rejected a bail application in the previous occasion and Weerawansa had resorted to staging a hunger strike while in prison over the rejection of his bail applications while he had also been hospitalized as a result of this. Werawansa has been accused of misusing several vehicles belonging to the Presidential Secretariat Office, during his tenure as the Minister of Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities, and thereby causing losses to the tune of Rs. 41 million to the government.
