The DMK who has 89 legislators has decided to vote against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswami in his trust vote tomorrow in the state legislature to decide whether he will remain in charge.  Therefore, it would be a tight trust vote for the proxy of AIADMK chief VK Sasikala now in jail.

It is after 30 years that Tamil Nadu assembly is going to have a trust vote.  The last trust vote was held on January 27, 1988 after the AIADMK split between M.G. Ramachandran’s widow Janaki Ramachandran and the party’s propaganda secretary J Jayalalithaa whose group was headed by V R Nedunchezhiyan.

Mr. Palaniswami took oath as the state’s 13th Chief Minister yesterday along with a cabinet of 30 and opted to prove within two days that he has majority support.

Mr. Stalin of DMK states that Mr. Palaniswami need to prove the support of at least half or 117 legislators. If the DMK had abstained, the halfway mark would have been lower.

The ruling AIADMK has 134 legislators, of whom all but 11 back Mr. Palaniswami. So currently, the chief minister has only six more than the 117 he needs.

His chief rival O Panneerselvam has however alleged that at least 10 MLAs in the Sasikala Camp are with him and will vote against Mr. Palaniswami if the trust vote is conducted through a secret ballot. He met the assembly Speaker today to demand a secret vote; Mr. Stalin, who is Leader of Opposition, has also demanded one.

One AIADMK legislator has also crossed over today to the Panneerselvam Camp, which already has the support of 10 party MLAs.

Mr. Panneerselvam too had staked claim to the top post but could not gather enough support. That is because, he alleges, most of the party’s MLAs were whisked away by Ms. Sasikala to a five-star resort 80 km from Chennai and were held there against their will to prevent defections.
