Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe arrived at the Brussels International Airport, Belgium yesterday (16).  The main objective of Prime Minister’s visit to Brussels is engage in crucial discussions with European Union to regain the withdrawn Generalized System of Preferences plus (GSP+) tariff concession facility to Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka delegation led by Prime Minister Wickremesinghe was received by Sri Lankan ambassador in Brussels Rodney Perera at the Renaissance Hotel in the heart of the Belgian capital Brussels.

Sri Lankan envoy in Brussels Rodney Perera said that Sri Lankan forex reserve will receive a boost by 10–15 per cent, if European Union GSP+ concession is restored to Sri Lanka.

He said that Sri Lankan exporters will receive preferential access to the European market, if this trade concession is restored to Sri Lanka. Belgium was one of the first countries to rush to Sri Lanka’s assistance when the country was hit by the 2004 tsunami and Belgian Army personnel were engaged in the reconstruction drive of Sri Lanka’s southern coastal belt devastated by tsunami waves.

During his short visit, the Premier will hold discussions with his Belgium counterpart Prime Minister Charles Michelle, Prince Laurent and other top leaders of the Belgian government. He will also engage in discussions with the chairmen and the top officials of the European Union and European Council regarding the GSP+ facility.

Chief of Prime Minister’s Staff and Law and Order, Southern Development Minister Sagala Ratnayaka, Secretary to the Prime Minister Saman Ekanayake, Additional Secretary Saman Athaudahetty and special assistant Sandra Perera accompanied the Prime Minister. Member of European Parliament for South East England Niranjan Deva Aditya and Sri Lankan embassy officials in Brussels were present at the hotel.
