Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by 90 runs in the first ODI in Dambulla to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

Bangladesh team has picked up from right where they left off in the Tests and this win will be another feather to impressive recent ODI performances. Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan fashioned their formidable score of 324 for 5 before a combined effort from the bowlers and fielders shut Sri Lanka out for 234 in 45.1 overs. This was the first time Bangladesh had posted a 300-plus total away from home against a higher-ranked team.

Bangladesh broke down their strategy into fine segments to not allow Sri Lanka even a whiff of an opportunity. Sri Lanka needed someone, like Tamim, to bat through the innings, but kept losing wickets on the face of some disciplined bowling. Tamim, the match’s top-scorer scored 127, and Shakib scored 71-ball 72. Sabbir Rahman’s half-century was equally important as it helped drive Bangladesh after the early loss of Soumya Sarkar. During the course of his innings, Tamim became the first Bangladeshi to cross 10,000 international runs.

Mashrafe Mortaza: “Obviously, it was important to win, especially when it is a three-match series, the first game becomes important. I think we played the perfect game today. If you look at our game, Tamim, Mushfiqur have all played for the last 10 years and are very experienced. If you look at the history of this ground, 250-270 would have been a par score. I think Tamim was phenomenal. Shakib also played very well and Mosaddek and Mahmudullah finished well”.

Upul Tharanga: “I think we controlled the middle period very well. But we bowled very badly and on the field also, we gave around 25-30 runs extra. We have to improve in all three departments. Chasing big totals, someone needs to get a big score. We lost three wickets in the first ten overs. Chasing 300, someone needs to get that big score, which we did not do today”.

Tamim: “I had a lot of opportunities to score fifties, but I did not convert the. But the past is past, and whenever I have the opportunity, I want to score and help the team in the process as well. Batting till the 45th over is not easy, lot of sweat goes down. We just kept our cool and kept rotating the strike. The way Shakib played was exceptional. I knew if I scored 135 or so, we could get to 300. That is what I tried to do. The heat got to me”.

Tamim Iqbal is the Man of the Match for his century.
