Australia 168/6 (20/20 ov)

Sri Lanka 172/5 (20/20 ov)

Sri Lanka won by 5 wickets (with 0 balls remaining)

Sri Lanka claimed a nail biting 5 wickets win over Australia in the 1st Twenty20 International in Melbourne today. Chasing a 169 run target, in-form Asela Gunaratne scored a 37 ball 52 to help Sri Lanka score 172 for 5 in the final delivery of the match.

Sri-Lanka-CricketDilshan Munaweera scored 44 while flamboyant Niroshan Dickwella scored a quickfire 30.

The Australians were restricted to 168 for 6 after Upul Tharanga sent the hosts into bat.

Captain Aaron Finch top scored for the Australia with a 34 ball 43.

Paceman Lasith Malinga, playing his first international match in 12 months, was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers, claiming two wickets in two balls while also taking a couple of catches on his return.

Sri Lanka is touring Australia on the back of a 2-1 T20 series win over South Africa and has a superior winning record over the hosts in T20s.

Finch: Credit to the Sri Lankans. They came out swinging and attacked the chase. When you have the power to hit down the ground and also scoop over the keeper, it is tough to bowl to. I thought Turner gave us a chance there, but unfortunately it did not go our way. I thought we were a bit short. We lacked maybe a 15-plus over. There were a lot of positives too and I am looking forward to Geelong.

Tharanga: Thanks to the Sri Lankan supporters. We have beaten South Africa and Australia – one of the best teams in the world – and it is a good feeling. All the batters enjoyed the game. Fielding is the area where we have to improve. The bowlers, though, did well to keep them to 168.

Asela Gunaratne is the Player of the Match.

The second match of the on-going series will be worked off in Geelong on Sunday.
