Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators have rallied in Romania’s capital, Bucharest, Victory Square following the controversial decree that fuelled their discontent.

Fulfilling a promise made late on Saturday, the government announced on Sunday it had approved to withdraw a controversial executive order that would have would have shielded many politicians from prosecution for corruption.

However, protesters remain unsatisfied and some are calling the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu to resign. The protestors are afraid that new legislation, promised by the prime minister when he abolished the decree, might contain some of the same elements in a different form.

After repealing the decree, Grindeanu asked the justice minister to prepare a draft law to be sent to parliament for debate and approval.
