Prime Minister Receives Recommendations From Chief Prelates for the Proposed Constitution

The Chief Prelates of the Asgiri and Malwathu Chapters have handed over submitted a list of recommendations on the content of the proposed new constitution to the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today (24).

Chief Prelate of the Asgiri Chapter Ven. Warakagoda Gnanarathna thera said tht the identification of Sri Lanka as one unified state was mandatory.  He also stated that the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution should be removed. The Chief Prelate of the Asgiri Chapter also proposed to include provisions for the Parliament to nullify harmful proposals adopted at provincial councils with a simple majority.

Meanwhile the Chief Prelate of the Malwathu Chapter Ven. Thibbotuwawa Sumangala thera has also send a letter to the President with regard to the proposed Constitution.  The Mahanayake of the Malwathu Chapter also calls for an immediate stop of settlements in forest reserves and affirms the need to preserve places of worship in the North and East.

The Registrar of the Asgiri Chapter Ven. Medagama Dammananda thera said the Prime Minister agreed to the proposals in principle and said he will continue to seek the counsel of the Buddhist clergy in the constitution reform process.
