The Ministry of Ports and Shipping states that the country has incurred significant financial losses as a result of the 6 day long strike that impeded proceedings at the Hambantota port.

The Ministry says that as proceedings of the port have come to a standstill due to employees staging the protest in the ports administrative building.

However, the employees engaged in the protest said individuals who wish to engage in day to day operations will not be prevented from doing so.

A group of employees of the Hambantota Port have been protesting for several days demanding the government ensure them job security as the government prepares to lease the Port on shared basis to a Chinese firm. The employees were charged of forcibly holding two ships that arrived at the Magampura Port while steps were taken by the Navy to release the ships on the advice of the government.
