South Korean Parliament has voted to impeach President Park Geun-hye,  the country’s first female president in late 2012,  over a corruption scandal.

The motion passed by 234 votes to 56.  Some members of Ms. Park’s ruling Saenuri Party also voted in favour.

Hwang Kyo-ahn, the country’s Prime Minister, has become interim President.

Thousands of people took to the streets in recent weeks demanding Ms. Park’s removal.  After the vote, she again apologized that she had created this national chaos with her carelessness.

“I solemnly accept the voice of the parliament and the people and sincerely hope this confusion is soundly resolved,” Park said, according to the presidential office. “I wholeheartedly offer words of apology to the people as my lack of virtue and carelessness have caused great confusion at a time when the nation faces challenges over national security and the economy.”
