Pakistani Army Chief has confirmed the death sentences for 30 militants, including some convicted for the 2014 Taliban attack on a school in Peshawar that killed 144 school children.

This order came a few weeks after Pakistan extended for another two years a law allowing military courts to try civilians on terror charges in secret, despite strong criticism from rights groups.

Though the military has not given a date for the executions, the usual practice is to carry out it within 24-48 hours.

The militants were tried in military courts set up by authorities after the school attack.

In cases of capital punishment handed down by military courts, in trials conducted behind closed doors, the army chief is required to confirm the sentences.

According to an official statement, the army chief, Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa has signed the death sentences on Wednesday.
