Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Mahinda Amaraweera has states that steps will be taken to cancel the licences of passenger transport boats which fail to follow the guidelines outlined by the ministry.

Issuing a statement, the Fisheries Ministry said the boat which was carrying a number of families from the Beruwala Fisheries Community, set out in a procession of boats, as part of the celebration of an annual feast in Beruwala was primarily meant to be used for deep sea fishing and could only carry 5 people.  Therefore, the boat which capsized last morning in Katukurunda was in no way suitable for passenger transportation.

However, investigations conducted by the Fisheries Ministry revealed that there were over 30 individuals on board at the time of the incident.

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has ordered a report to be submitted pertaining to this incident.
