Richter 5.8 Magnitude earthquake has struck Uttarakhand, India at 10.35 p.m. on Monday night. The quake caused tremors that were felt across northern India. Two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been rushed to Rudraprayag to conduct relief and rescue operations should the need arise.

The quake had its epicentre near Ukimath in Rudraprayag district of the hill state, where assembly elections are scheduled to be held next week. Scientists said the earthquake was shallow, with a depth of just seven kilometres.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) located the epicentre in the mountain state’s Rudraprayag District. However, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and United States Geological Service (USGS) have located the epicentre close to Pipalkoti.

Tremors were reported from Delhi-NCR, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Agra and a number of other places in the region. The tremors were reported to have lasted over 30 seconds in some places.

The situation is being closely monitored by the Centre.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tweeted that his office is in touch with officials in Uttarakhand. “I pray for everyone’s safety & well-being,” PM Modi tweeted, adding, “Spoke to officials & took stock of the situation in the wake of the earthquake felt in various parts of North India.”
