Politburo member of the Frontline Socialist Party Noel Mudalige also known as Kumar Gunaratnam was released from the Anuradhapura Prison after serving a year-long sentence.

The Party said Gunaratnam’s papers for Sri Lankan citizenship were sent to the Department Of Immigration and Emigration yesterday. Gunaratnam was issued Visa in order for him to reside in the country till the completion of the paper work.

“I will cancel my Australian citizenship when government confirms my Sri Lankan citizenship,” Gunaratnam told reporters after his release.

He was arrested on the 4th of November last year by the Kegalle Police on charges of violating visa regulations and was later issued a one year lenient prison sentence.

The government yesterday revealed that Gunaratnam will not be deported from the country if a formal request is made. The media unit of the Party said requests were forwarded to the Immigration and Emigration Department in February and November 2015 calling for citizenship.
