Bimal Rathnayake, JVP MP revealed that about 2,000 students who passed the GCE A/L examination could not receive university education due to inefficiency on the part of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the government, Parliament was told yesterday.  He challenged the Minister Lakshman Kiriella to present the list of the students who were enrolled to the universities annually.

He also stated that the Chairman of the UGC is playing a role of a manager.  He further stated that even a small child can do that job.  He also stated that annually more than 2,000 students lose their chances to enter the university due to the inefficiency of the UGC staff.  Therefore, he requested the parents to rise against this situation.

Bimal Rathnayake said that the Government is boasting about admitting 50,000 students to the university while reducing the money allocation for the higher education.

“Allocations for the higher education by the budget 2017 have been cut down by Rs. 135 billion when compared to the previous year. The government is paving the way for the development of the private education sector.
