Iran President Hassan Rouhani has been re-elected with an emphatic victory receiving 57% votes out of more than 40 million votes cast, defeating his main rival Ebrahim Raisi.

According to official results, Rouhani has claimed 23.5 million votes, while his rival Ebrahim Raisi trailed on 15.8 million, after nearly three-quarters of the electorate cast their votes.

Polling stations were forced to stay open until midnight in parts of the country because so many Iranians wanted to vote, defying fears of voter apathy.

Mr. Rouhani, a moderate who agreed a deal with world powers to limit Iran’s nuclear programme, pledged to “remain true” to his promises.

The decisive victory gives him a strong mandate to seek reforms and revive Iran’s ailing economy, analysts say.

In his first remarks after winning the poll, Mr. Rouhani said on Twitter (in Persian): “Great people of Iran, you’re the winners of the election.”

In a victory speech to the nation on live TV, Rouhani promised to rule for all Iranians. But while celebrating his huge mandate in the election, which he labelled the “most competitive ever”, he also described his opponents as dangerously backward-looking.
