The Government says Sri Lanka is expected to obtain the GSP Plus trade concession by the end of this year, following successful discussions held in Brussels.  State Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs Niroshan Perera states that that the final round of discussions held in Brussels between the EU and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe were successful

There were several rounds of discussions held with the European Union in an attempt to regain GSP Plus.

Sri Lanka lost access to the EU GSP Plus trade concession since 2009 over human rights related issues.  As a result there was a drastic decrease in Sri Lanka’s apparel sector.

It was a election promise of the present Yahapalana Government to regain the GSP Plus Concession after coming to power.  Therefore, Sri Lanka reapplied for the EU GSP as soon as the present government came to power.
