Government To Increase Minimum Fine Of Rs.25,000 For 7 Traffic Offences

The Government has announced that they have decided to increase the minimum fine for seven traffic offences to 25,000 rupees.

The Ministry of Finance issuing a communiqué, said the proposed increase will be implement through the 2017 Budget.

Accordingly, a 25,000 rupee fine will be imposed for following offences.
1. Persons driving under the influence
2. For driving a vehicle without a valid driving license
3. For aiding a person to drive a vehicle without a valid license
4. High speed
5. Overtaking a vehicle from the left side
6. Reckless driving at railway crossings
7. Driving without a valid insurance certificate.

Speaking to media, the Minister of Transport Nimal Siripala De Silva stated that this decision was taken following a discussion with several transport unions and all parties have given their consent for this increase.

Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake, Deputy Minister of Transport Ashoka Abeysinghe, police officials and representatives of several trade unions were also joined the discussion.
