Over 30 trade unions attached to health, education, transport and railway services are to go ahead with the planned 24-hour countrywide strike on May 5 (today) at 8.00 a.m. in protest against SAITM. However, the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) states that they make sure that no patient dies and all maternity and children’s hospitals will function as usual.

Addressing a press conference held at the GMOA Head Quarters, Dr. Navin De Zoysa stated that the strike will also not affect the functions of the Maharagama Cancer Hospital, all kidney treatment institutions, all accident wards countrywide.

“All state medical officers including ayurvedic doctors, dental and veterinary surgeons will be refraining from engaging in services from 8.00 am tomorrow to 8.00 am on Saturday. The workers attached to other trade unions will hold demonstrations and protests around the country,” he said.

Dr. Zoysa also tated that the safety of patients’ lives and the quality of medical education should be protected on behalf of the country’s innocent poor people who cannot afford to obtain medical treatment from the Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore. There is no problem for the persons who can afford to seek medical treatment from the Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.
