Four Policemen Remanded Over Death Of Suspect In Police Custody

Four policemen including a former Officer-In-Charge (OIC) attached to the Wadduwa Police Station has been remanded till March 6 over the death of a suspect, Nimal Chandrasiri Dahanayke (42) in the police custody.

According to the information that the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) had received at the time, Chandrasiri Dasanayaka of Thalpitiya, Wadduwa was illegally arrested by the police officers attached to the Wadduwa Police Station and later extrajudicially killed inside the station on 15 April 2012.

Police Media Spokesman DIG Priyantha Jayakody stated that the then OIC of Wadduwa Police Station retired Inspector Nimal Karunaratne and three other policemen were arrested by a special CID team following an investigation.

The four policemen were arrested following a probe over the death of a male suspect in the Wadduwa Police custody in April, 2012. The suspect policemen including the retired officer were produced before the Panadura Magistrate and the he ordered that four suspects to be remanded till March 6
