The European Parliament has voted to defeat a resolution to deny granting the GSP+ tariff concession to Sri Lanka.

The resolution submitted by a group of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) saying that the GSP+ should not be granted to Sri Lanka.  It has been defeated by an overwhelming majority of votes in the European Parliament in Belgium.

This is seen as a victory for the Sri Lankan Government as it would make Sri Lankan exports to the European Union (EU) cheaper and contributed to its export growth vital to boost external reserves.

Deputy Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva said that Sri Lanka won the vote in Brussels after 436 MEPs voted against, 119 voted in favor and 22 abstained for the motion to deny GSP plus for Sri Lanka taken up at the plenary session.

“We are very happy and it’s all done now. All voting sessions are over. We successfully defeated the resolution which was presented against granting us the GSP+ tariff concession,” Dr. De Silva said.

He also stated that the next level of regaining GSP+ was the consent of the European Council of the Ministers which is a procedural step. “We expect there will be no objection at the Council of Ministers. Once they give approval, a gazette will be issued making it the law,” he added.
