The construction of the ‘world’s tallest Christmas Tree’ at the Galle Face Green has been temporarily suspended.

The suspension comes in the wake of criticism by Archbishop of Colombo, who termed the endeavour ‘wasteful expenditure’, saying the money should be used to build homes for the homeless or to provide scholarships to poor children.

The tree reportedly funded by the Arjuna Ranatunga Welfare Fund and will be built using iron, old wood material, chicken wire mesh and vinyl flowers.

The 325 ft tree was scheduled to be completed by December 22 and displayed for 10 days beginning on Christmas Day.

Labour on the ‘World’s Tallest Christmas Tree’ is reportedly volunteered by Sri Lanka Ports Authority workers.

But the organizers of this endeavour says that none of the Port Authority workers are working for them.
