About 50 people have been reported killed and and 80 more injured after a car bomb struck Syria’s northwestern city of Azaz in northern Syria, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Rami Abdurrahman, the head of the Observatory, said those killed included six opposition fighters. He said the explosion was caused by a rigged water or fuel tanker, which explains the large blast and high death toll.

Witnesses said there were many unidentified bodies because of the strength of the explosion, according to Baha al-Halabi, a media activist based in Aleppo province who gathered information from people in Azaz.

There has been no claim of responsibility so far, but ISIS car bombs have targeted the city, near the Turkish border, in the previous attacks.  This area is a stronghold of the Turkish-backed Syrian rebels involved in a major operation aimed at clearing the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group from the border region.
