The proposed water tariff increase by 30 per cent has been suspended by the Cabinet of Ministers.

Minister of Petroleum Chandima Weerakody told a media briefing held at the Parliamentary complex that a proposal made by President Maithripala Sirisena to suspend the 30 per cent water tariff increase was unanimously approved by the Cabinet.

Addressing a press conference in Colombo, he stated that a three-member committee comprising Ministers Rauff Hakeem, Ravi Karunanayake and Dr. Sarath Amunugama has been appointed to look into the matter.  The National Water Supply and Drainage Board announced on Saturday that the water tariff will be increased by 30 per cent on average with effect from December 01, 2016.

Water Board Chairman K. A. Ansar said stated that low-income households, religious institutions and schools will be exempted from this tariff hike, which is taking place after 4 years.  He said that the water tariff is increased every 3 years, however the water utility tariff was last revised in 2012.
