The former Minister Basil Rajapaksa has denied allegation made by Minister Dilan Perera with regard to secret deal with the UNP, Basil Rajapaksa.

Addressing a gathering at Nelum Mawatha office of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Basil Rajapaksa stated that the Rajapaksas, too, had used Dilan Perera, when they were in power. At this state, 13 ex- members of Minuwangoda Pradeshiya Sabha and seven out of eight member of the Minuwangoda Municipal Council joined the newly formed Sri Lanka People’s Front.

Basil Rajapaksa claimed that the new party had been formed to protect the interests of former UPFA members of local government bodies. Accusing new SLFP leadership of neglecting those who had been the party’s strength at grassroot level, Rajapaksa said that there were repeated calls for the formation of a new outfit. “People told us not to any election without the blessings of Mahinda Rajapaksa.”

He said the formation of the SLPF shouldn’t be considered as a strategy directed against any individual as it had been founded to fulfill a long felt political need. He also stressed that neither Rajapaksas nor those working with them had any secret deals with the UNP.

He further stated that the SLFPers who had accepted portfolios in the government should vote against the Budget if they were genuinely desirous of defeating the UNP.
