(China) At least 15 bodies have been recovered from the rubble of a landslide in southwestern China.  A desperate search for scores of survivors is under way in after the massive landslide which buried a mountain village.

China-landslideThe landslide hit the village of Xinmo, in Maoxin county of Sichuan province, at about 6.00 a.m. on Saturday.

China’s official news agency Xinhua issued the updated death toll at 14:00 GMT on Saturday, saying the landslide had buried more than 120 people from 62 homes.

About 1,000 rescue workers using life-detection equipment hustled through the night to locate survivors. Dozens of homes were buried.

“Authorities must make maximum efforts to reduce casualties and prevent secondary disasters,” Chinese President Xi Jinping said, calling for “all-out efforts” to save those who were buried.

Heavy rainfall is thought to be a possible cause of the accident, according to the provincial government’s Land and Resources Department.

The landslide has also blocked a 2km-section of a river.
