Around 75 per cent of the resurfacing of the runway at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake has been completed and as the runaway of BIA has been expanded from 60 to 75 meters, Airbus A-380 operations can be done easily said Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Nimal Siripala De Silva.

He also stated that in case the runaway was not repaired there was a possibility that the airport would have got blacklisted. That is the reason we started the repair work on 6th January.

The runway, which was closed on the 6th of January for maintenance, is scheduled to be completed on the 6th of April.

Accordingly, the width of the runway will be increased to 75 meters from 60 meters. According to the standards of international airline services, the maintenance and resurfacing of the runway should be conducted once in every 10 years.

However, the Bandaranaike International Airport is being resurfaced after a 30 year lapse. The BIA has a single runway constructed and commissioned in 1986 under the “Colombo International Airport Development Project Phase 1”.

The development work is being done according to the technology of Netherlands by the Chinese firm Cathic. Foreign as well as Sri Lankan engineers have confirmed the strength of this runaway for more than 20 years.
